High Availability

Many terms are used when discussing Business Continuity, often these are used interchangeable which is cause for confusion and ambiguity. Business Continuity incorporates everything necessary to ensure the business continues to operate, this would include technology, communications, people, processes, and physical space.

High Availability is a component with in Business Continuity and is usually used when discussing an IT based application and/or data that needs to be highly available to employees, customers or partners. All system recovery and fail over would typically occur with in the local site which would produce an outage from seconds to minutes depending on the needs defined. Disaster Recovery is similar in nature but would also build in the ability to recover at an alternative site whether this be in the same city or half way around the world. Clustered systems provide a level fault tolerance which produces no down time in the event of a disaster.

Down systems are expensive, this can be measured money, reputation and image. Depending on the type and size of a company it is common that down systems can costs businesses thousands or ten’s of thousands per hour.
